Sunday 6th July

Ouch - sore legs!!! We started exploring NYC today- lots of fun!!
Em and I were a bit devastated we couldn't watch Wimbledon final (and even more devastated with the result!) but we thought we should actually not sit and watch from 9am but get out of the hotel.

So, after a visit to a heavily scaffolded St Patrick's Cathedral for Mass, we made our way to a bike hire place near Central Park and went for a huge ride through the park with many, many other riders, horses, walkers, joggers etc. Finbarr had a tandem bike with me, and after a very wobbly start (literally), and a very worried boy, and a lot of reassurances from me that it wouldn't break and we wouldn't have a crash, we got the hang of it and had a great time. Hills were a bit challenging, and so was finding Joseph after he enthusiastically took off ahead of us and disappeared, but we spent just over 2 hours riding and seeing all the parts of the park.  I've definitely watched too many "Law and Order" and "Third Watch" shows because every second corner or bridge or hill looked like a scene where it could be roped off for a crime scene!!  Thankfully there were no gruesome finds today, just bright sunshine, blue skies and crowds of people enjoying a beautiful day.

Other things we did today in no particular order:
- we found Grand Central station and had a good look through.
- we went to Shake Shack for lunch - excellent burgers - we had to try them because we never see the place without a huge queue.
- we saw Times Square by day - so unbelievably crowded but amazing atmosphere and we found where we'll be seeing Matilda this week.
- we went to Whole Foods and bought some great food. It's so hard to find a supermarket or fresh fruit here and we just wanted to have some food without it being a full on meal. Whole foods is excellent, and a good place for spotting New Yorkers instead of tourists.
- Magnolia Bakery - fantastic chocolate cupcakes - even some gluten free ones for Damian.  We were lucky  - no queue at all so we thought we may as we'll grab some even though it wasn't really the
right time of day!

- shopping - we checked out J Crew, Anthropologie and a couple of others in the Rockerfeller centre while the 4th July sales were still on.

Now we're tired but happy and ready for bed!!

St Patrick's - looks like it will be beautiful again when the scaffolding is removed!!
